How it works
How The Complaint Rate Is Checked
The lines are compared with exact whole-number arithmetic, so a rate just under a line is never shown as on it.
- 01
Pick The Base
Emails delivered to the inbox, emails delivered, or emails sent: whichever your complaint count came with.
- 02
Enter The Counts
The number of emails in that base and the spam complaints they drew. Unsubscribes are optional.
- 03
Compare With The Lines
0.10% is what Google recommends staying under, and 0.30% is the line Gmail and Yahoo require.
- 04
See Your Margin
The calculator shows how many complaints on this base would reach each line.
The formula
Spam Complaint Rate Formula
Spam complaint rate = spam complaints ÷ emails in the base × 100. Example: 3 complaints on 4,000 emails delivered to the inbox is 0.075%.
Gmail's Postmaster Tools counts only DKIM-signed email that reached the inbox, and Yahoo also bases its rate on mail delivered to the inbox. A rate worked out on delivered or sent emails is lower than theirs whenever some email went to spam, so it cannot show that you are within their lines.

What The AI Does
When you ask, SpirenAI, SendCanyon's AI, explains your complaint rate against the 0.10% and 0.30% lines and the base you chose, and suggests what to do next. It sees only the calculated figures and notes, and drops any sentence with a number it was not given.
- Runs only when you ask for it
- Explains the base you chose
- Drops numbers it was not given
- Never quotes averages or benchmarks
Spam Complaint Rate Questions
Google, Yahoo and Microsoft rules, how each counts, and where to find your numbers.
Divide spam complaints by the emails they could have come from and multiply by 100. The base matters: Gmail and Yahoo divide by email delivered to the inbox, most sending tools by delivered email, and Microsoft's SNDS by the recipients of email an IP sent. For example, 3 complaints on 4,000 emails delivered to the inbox is 0.075%.
